Principle
These reactions in gas phase will simplify the MS-spectra giving nearly only the M+ or MH+ ions |
Features
- The simplest sampling procedure. There are a variety of sample holders to automatically move or hold the sample in front of the gas stream and acquire spectra
- No sample preparation is necessary. Solids, liquids and vapours can be analysed as seen
- No reagents or solvents are required. The only variable is the temperature of the gas stream. Once the correct temperature is achieved, spectra are produced instantaneously.
- Because there are no reagents, there are no background ions so everything detected originates in the sample
- DART can be fitted to most mass spectrometers with an ESI or APCI source including Thermo-Finnigan, Agilent, Bruker, ABI and Waters
- SVP Controller handle gas, temperature etc. controlled by iPod

Dart was invented by Cody & Laramée in 2005
DART "Direct Analysis in Real Time" is an Ionization Technique for Mass Spectrometry.
This is a revolutionary new ionization technique for rapid non-contact analysis of samples without any sample preparation.
DART is operating at ambient pressure at the ground potential and gives, together with a high resolution (R=6000) Time Of Flight instrument an almost instant composition of the sample. |

DART Flexible Sampling Options
Unlike most ionisation techniques, DART requires no sample preparation and spectra are obtained from untreated samples. Tablets, TLC plates, packaging and foodstuffs are just a few examples we have analysed directly. To accomodate the many different sample shapes and states, Ionsense have developed a range of sample holders which are easily attached to the motorised rail to simplify and automate analysis. Some of the different sample holders currently available are shown below. |

|
| |
|
With adjustalbe angle |
 |
Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) plate holder
- Spring loaded plate holder makes it easy to change plates
- Motorized rail moves TLC-plate across Dart ionization beam
- Suitable for borh preparative and anaytical TLC-plates
- Can be used to hold microscope slides etc.

Liquid Analysis
|
- Use a melting point tube
- Dip it into the liquid
- Optimum position
- Moved into the gas stream either manual or by the motorized rail
|
| |
- Spectra are produced instantaneosly
- Samples and reference samples can be run simultaniously for accurate mass measurement
|
 |
| |
|
|
Multiple Liquid Sample Analysis
- Up to 12 samples in the holder
- Spacing of DIPit holder allows sampling from multi-well plates
- Mororized rail moves samples into gas stream on-by-one
- 12 samples < 1 min

 |
DIPit |
| For use with CTC autoinjector or multiple sample holder |
|
 |
Tablet analysis
- Holds multiple tablets large or small
- Motorised rail moves automatically to next tablet
- Thermal stability studies through variation of gas temperature
|
 |
Adjustable Tweezers
- Spring-loaded grip for irregularly-shaped objects
- Ideal for plant material
- Analysis of ready products like chips
- Simplifies forensic analysis of clothing and other material
